About two weeks ago, I stumbled upon an app called Habitica. I had heard of gamification before but never thought it would be something I would try. It’s safe to say I’m impressed! Habitica makes it insanely easy to turn the chores you dread so much into rewarding tasks. Here’s my experience with Habitica and what I thought about it:
What is Gamification?
Before I tell you about Habitica, you first need to understand the concept on which the app is built. Gamification is the concept of turning aspects of your life into a game. This could be anything from going for a run to doing the dishes, but the general idea is that you set up a system where you gain rewards for completing tasks.
How Habitica Implements Gamification:
Habitica essentially is an app that turns your life into a game. The app has a ton of features that I could never hope to cover in-depth within one blog post. However, I will briefly go over each of the features that Habitica uses to encourage gamification.
Habits and Tasks:
Habitica’s system is built up of daily and weekly habits as well as a to-do list for more temporary tasks. You can set an unlimited amount of habits and tasks as well as change the difficulty and refresh time (when your streak ends) for each one.
In Habitica, you have your own customizable avatar. You can equip armour, items and pets which increase certain values for your character such as strength, intelligence etc. But best of all, Habitica incorporates a health and experience bar. This means that when you miss tasks or do something that negatively influences you, your health goes down. As well as this, when you complete tasks and habits you earn experience and coins (more on this later), which contribute to your level.
Coins and Shop:
With each completed task comes a certain amount of coins. You then use these coins to purchase items in the “rewards” tab or market. Habitica has a vast collection of possible items to purchase not only with coins but with other means of currency such as gems. On top of this, Habitica provides the opportunity to have pets! To get a pet by chance you have to either level up or complete tasks. You can also purchase them in the market as well as collect and buy food to feed and grow your pets.
In Habitica, there are multiple ways to play with friends and other players online.
The quest feature in Habitica allows you to party up with your friends and collaboratively complete quests of different difficulties.
The Tavern is a space where you can come to take a break. While you are in the Tavern you are not damaged by missing tasks and habits. The Tavern also provides a space for players to share their progress in the “Chat” tab.
Lastly, Habitica includes a community feature where anyone can create challenges for other players to complete. These are often a set of tasks you can do for gems.
My Experience With Habitica:
Throughout the past couple of weeks where I have used Habitica every day, I have noticed a significant improvement in the number of tasks I complete. I have also found it to be extremely fulfilling to tick of tasks and get rewarded for them. Here’s what I enjoy most about using Habitica:
The Look and Feel:
Habitica’s UI is very well designed. It is constructed in such a way that retains your attention and encourages you to explore more of the app. On top of this, Habitica is very well organised and provides a comfortable user experience even for first-time users of the app.
For the look and feel of Habitica, I rate it 5 stars.
With Habitica’s endless features (see above), it’s hard to get bored of the app. I honestly could not think of a single feature that I would add to this app. I see myself using Habitica for years to come.
For this reason, I rate Habitica 5 stars for features.
Settings and Customisation:
In Habitica’s settings menu, you’ll find a vast array of customisation options including theme, mode, music, notifications, character values, and everything else you would expect from a settings menu. Don’t let this big list fool you though. Habitica has a lot of settings options, but it may not have as many as other apps. However, for most users, this isn’t a problem.
For this reason, I will be giving Habitica a 4-star rating for settings and customisation.
Habitica’s large amount of features and customisation options as well as it’s fluent and easy to navigate UI makes it a great app to use overall. The ratings from the previous three categories provide an overall score of 4.6 stars.
Gamification isn’t for everyone, but at least trying to implement some form of it into your life can’t do much harm. At first, I thought it would never work for me but using Habitica has proved me wrong. With endless features and a great user experience, you can’t go wrong with Habitica. I would definitely recommend giving it a try, you might even be surprised!
As always, thank you for taking the time to read this post, I hope you found some value in what I have to say. Don’t forget to share Focus Weekly with your friends and family and subscribe to be notified via email whenever I post a new article, review, or otherwise!]
